Quick Answer
Google AI Pro or Ultra is not enough by itself to guarantee a Get AI credits button. Google excludes Apple billing, third-party Google One memberships, and Pixel Pass from purchasing AI credits; Google AI Plus is also ineligible.
Do not open a second subscription to solve one deadline. Identify the current merchant, record the renewal date and bundled benefits, then compare waiting for included usage with the cost of leaving that billing channel.
First identify who bills the membership
This guide covers the exit decision. The complete plan, country, family-manager, and pack-eligibility matrix is in Google AI credit purchase gates. The separate Gemini Apps five-hour and weekly limit guide explains which quota wall you hit before considering a billing change.
Open Google One and inspect Settings or Manage membership, then confirm the same merchant in the device or partner account.
| What you find | What Google’s current help says about AI-credit purchases | Where the subscription is managed |
|---|---|---|
| Google-billed Google AI Pro or Ultra | Potentially eligible, subject to country and family-role gates | Google One / Google Payments |
| Apple-billed Google One | Ineligible to purchase AI credits | Apple Subscriptions |
| Carrier or other third-party Google One | Ineligible to purchase AI credits | The partner’s site or app |
| Pixel Pass | Ineligible to purchase AI credits | Google Store / Pixel Pass |
| Google AI Plus | Ineligible regardless of the billing path | Current billing channel |
Google lists those exclusions in Manage your AI credits with Google One. Its separate purchase page limits purchases to eligible Pro and Ultra members, excludes Plus and Japan, and reserves family purchases for the plan manager.
The absence of a purchase button can therefore be a policy result, not proof of a broken checkout. Confirm every gate before changing a subscription.
Apple billing: an in-app Pro upgrade does not remove the gate
Google’s iOS membership guide explains how an Apple-billed member can change plans through iOS Settings. That plan change remains Apple billing. Google’s AI-credit management page still lists Apple billing as ineligible.
If recurring top-ups are important, the conservative channel-change sequence is:
- Record the Apple renewal date, current storage use, plan level, and the Apple Account that pays.
- Cancel renewal in Apple Subscriptions.
- Keep using the paid term until Apple shows that it has ended.
- Subscribe on the Google-billed web path with an eligible personal account and plan.
- Recheck the AI-credit activity page before assuming the purchase gate is open.
Google says a canceled Google One membership normally retains benefits until the end of the billing cycle. Its cancellation policy also sends Apple purchase refund requests to Apple. Apple’s refund process is a request subject to review, not a promise that the unused term will be returned.
The operating risk is the transition, especially when stored data exceeds the free storage allowance. Avoid overlapping subscriptions unless the continuity need is worth a possible duplicate charge.
Partner billing: price the bundle before leaving it
Google’s third-party subscription guide says plan changes and cancellation normally belong to the provider that bills the membership. It also documents a route from an eligible partner-billed membership to a Google-billed retail plan; when that route is offered, the original partner membership is canceled to prevent duplicate billing.
Before using it, write down:
- the partner discount or bundle that will disappear;
- the partner’s effective cancellation date;
- the Google retail price shown at checkout;
- the account that owns family management; and
- whether waiting for the included allowance is acceptable.
Do not infer purchase eligibility from an AI Pro label alone. The current AI-credit page excludes third-party billing as a category. A partner may also have its own plan-change limitations.
Pixel Pass: one top-up is rarely worth dismantling the bundle
Google’s Pixel Pass management page says Pixel Pass is no longer offered for new Pixel purchases or renewals. Its Google One benefit and device-financing relationship make cancellation broader than an ordinary AI-plan switch.
Google’s cancellation page says canceling the included Google One membership requires canceling Pixel Pass. Confirm any remaining device payment, the end date of bundled services, and the Google One storage consequence before taking that route.
For an occasional Gemini limit, waiting is normally the lower-disruption option. For recurring Flow, Antigravity, or Gemini overflow, compare the documented Pixel Pass exit amount with a separate Google-billed plan before acting.
A channel-change decision
| Situation | Lower-risk action |
|---|---|
| One unusual deadline | Wait for included usage to refresh; do not dismantle a bundle for one top-up |
| Plus plan | Compare a plan upgrade first; Plus cannot purchase AI credits |
| Apple or partner billing with recurring overflow | Price cancellation timing and lost bundle value, then move to a Google-billed eligible plan |
| Pixel Pass with device payments remaining | Treat it as a device-and-services exit, not an AI checkout fix |
| Family member, not plan manager | Ask the manager; switching billing on the member account does not grant manager authority |
After any change, reopen the live purchase surface. A new merchant removes only one gate; plan, country, age, and family role still apply.
