You Can't Always Buy Google AI Credits: Check These Eligibility Gates

Google AI credit top-ups require Pro or Ultra, exclude Japan and several billing channels, and can be bought only by the family plan manager.

Google AI credits are not an always-available emergency top-up. Google’s purchase page says one-time credits are available to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra, not Google AI Plus, and are not available for purchase in Japan. A separate Google One management page excludes memberships billed through a third party, Pixel Pass, or Apple. In a family group, only the plan manager can buy more.

Those rules were checked on 28 August 2026 against Google’s current help pages. If Get AI credits is missing from the AI credits page, test the gates below before treating checkout as broken.

The four purchase gates

The plan gate comes directly from Purchase Google AI credits. That page names Pro and Ultra, excludes Plus and Japan, and says family members cannot buy separately.

The billing-channel gate comes from Manage your AI credits with Google One. A Pro badge alone therefore does not prove purchase eligibility. Check who bills the Google One membership.

Plus is not a hidden top-up path

Google’s purchase page is explicit that Google AI Plus cannot buy AI credits. Its Plus benefits page adds a narrow distinction: credits bought before switching to Plus may remain usable. A carried balance is not permission to buy a new pack.

If an account is on Plus, the documented choices are to wait for included usage to refresh or move to an eligible plan. Do not budget a client job around a top-up button that Google’s own purchase policy excludes.

Japan and billing channels can remove the button

Google’s purchase page says AI credits are not available for purchase in Japan. The management page also excludes Japan from credit support for Google Flow and Google Antigravity. This article does not infer eligibility from a device locale; use the country or region shown in the account’s Google One and payments surfaces.

The management page lists three ineligible billing paths together:

  • Google One memberships subscribed through a third party
  • Pixel Pass
  • Apple billing

That is a purchase restriction, not a claim that every AI benefit disappears. It means an otherwise eligible plan can still lack the add-on. Before changing billing channels, read the cancellation and refund rules for the party that currently bills the membership; Google’s policy page directs Apple purchases back to Apple and partner-billed purchases back to the relevant provider.

Family credits are shared, but purchasing is not

Google One can pool eligible AI credits across a family group. It does not give every member a checkout.

Only the plan manager can buy additional credits or change the membership. Google’s management page says family members may see total credit usage, while its more detailed family section says the activity view can show each member’s total use. A member who needs overflow should coordinate with the manager rather than expecting an individual pack.

For someone who holds both an individual and a family membership, Google says the allocations combine, individual usage is not shared with the family group, and the memberships retain two refresh dates. Record both dates before using the combined balance for scheduled work.

What an eligible buyer can purchase

Google lists example one-time amounts of 2,500, 5,000, or 20,000 credits, while warning that credits are offered in various increments. Those are examples, not a universal price table. Read the live chooser in the account’s currency.

Google also avoids publishing one universal expiry period. The purchase page says credits may expire after the period shown when they are acquired. Save that purchase-screen term; do not assume a 12-month wallet.

After a credit purchase, an account holder aged 18 or older can set auto-reload. Google documents these controls:

  • An initial credit purchase is required before auto-reload can be enabled.
  • Auto-reload triggers below a selected balance threshold.
  • Reloads are limited to five purchases per day, with notifications for each reload.
  • Changing the reload amount requires canceling the current auto-reload plan and setting up another.

Treat auto-reload as a recurring purchase rule, not a usage alert. The management path is under Payments & subscriptions, where the reload plan can be canceled.

When credits appear to vanish

Google says a credit is spent when it is used to perform an activity. If the AI tool fails, the remaining balance should not be affected, although the credits can take time to reappear. Check AI credits activity before buying another pack.

The purchase page covers extra usage in Gemini, Google Flow, and Google Antigravity. It does not turn the add-on into more storage, and it does not publish a general promise that unused credits are refundable. Read Google One’s purchase, cancellation, and refund policies and the terms shown at checkout before buying.

A safe pre-purchase check

  1. Confirm the account says Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra, not Plus.
  2. Confirm the purchase country or region is not Japan.
  3. Confirm Google, rather than Apple, Pixel Pass, a carrier, or another partner, bills the membership.
  4. Confirm the signed-in user is the family plan manager.
  5. Open the live chooser and record the amount, price, expiry term, and reload setting.

If any of the first four checks fails, extra credits are not a dependable same-day overflow plan. Change the plan or billing path only after pricing that change against waiting for the included allowance to refresh.
