Google's 12-Month Student AI Offer: Know the Month-13 Bill Before You Claim

Google’s back-to-school AI offer is a 12-month free trial with a saved card, not a prepaid gift. Claim it only after you know which plan you will convert into, what that plan costs in your market, and the date you must cancel to avoid the first paid charge.

This is the Google version of the same decision we already mapped for ChatGPT in the ChatGPT student Plus exit alarm: treat the free window as a billing clock, not a forever seat. The products, durations, and renewal prices are different. Do not reuse that playbook’s numbers here.

Google announced the offer on 19 August 2026. You must redeem by 31 December 2026. The 12 free months start on the day you claim, not on the announcement date.

The split that decides your bill

The offer is not one product. Google routes you by the country or region of your eligible higher-education institution, not by where you happen to be traveling.

Those Pro / Plus contents and renewal prices are from Google’s 19 August 2026 student post and its footnotes, which point at the same Offer Terms. They are not a live price check of every country.

A payment method is required at sign-up on both tracks. If you do not cancel before the offer period ends, Google charges the standard monthly price for the plan included in your offer, in your country, until you cancel.

Set the exit alarm before you claim

Do this on the same day you redeem, not in month 11.

Write down the redemption date. The Offer Terms time the free period from the day you redeem, not from 19 August 2026. A 30 December 2026 claim is free until about 30 December 2027, then it bills.

Put two calendar alerts on a calendar you actually see: 21 days before the offer ends, and 48 hours before it ends. Title them with the plan and the expected charge (AI Pro $19.99 or AI Plus $4.99 / local).
Decide the month-13 move in writing: keep the paid plan, switch plans if that option is shown on your account, or cancel and return to the free Gemini plan with 15 GB of storage.
Cancel through Google’s own flow, not by deleting the app or the card on file. Official how-to: Cancel your Google One membership.

Canceling early does not always cut the free year short. The Offer Terms say that if you cancel during the offer period, membership may remain active until the end of the offer period. That is the correct way to stop month-13 auto-charge while still using the remaining free days. Confirm the end date on your account after you cancel.

Do not “cancel” by removing the card and hoping the charge fails. The terms require a qualifying payment method at sign-up; a failed charge is not a clean exit.

Geographic exclusions (Plus offer)

The Plus free year is not “everywhere outside the U.S.”

Google’s student-post footnote and the Offer Terms both exclude students whose institution is in:

Bolivia
Albania
Canada
Macau
Hong Kong
Tunisia

The U.S. is excluded from Plus because it is on the Pro track. Canada, Hong Kong, and Macau are on neither track for this 12-month free offer.

The student post describes Plus as available to eligible students in over 140 markets where Google AI Plus is sold, minus the list above. That is a narrower claim than Google’s live Plus availability list (the U.S. subscriptions page, seen 28 August 2026, says Plus is sold in more than 160 countries and territories). Eligibility for this offer is the Offer Terms, not the generic Plus map.

If your school is in an excluded market, stop. There is no honest workaround in this article.

Eligibility that affects the charge

From the Offer Terms, you must:

Be 18 or older
Be enrolled at a higher-education institution in a country/region where the included plan is supported (minus the exclusion list)
Pass SheerID student verification
Use a personal Google Account
Have a Google Payments account with a qualifying payment method at sign-up

You do not qualify if you are in a family group, buying as an enterprise, on a discounted Pixel bundle, getting Google One through a third party such as Google Fi, or using a supervised account. The offer is not available on a school-issued Workspace for Education account.

Google may ask for more information and reserves the right to decide eligibility.

This site does not publish, hint at, or “for informational purposes” walk through fake school emails, borrowed student IDs, VPN-to-look-American tricks, or any other way to spoof SheerID. If you are not an eligible student, this offer is not yours. Buy a normal plan or stay on free Gemini.

What month 13 actually costs — and which page the number is from

Google currently publishes overlapping AI-plan numbers across I/O marketing, the student offer post, and the live subscriptions / Google One pages. Do not mix them. Every price below is tagged with URL, region, and the date it was seen.

Local checkout prices (NTD, EUR, INR, etc.) were not checked country by country for this article. Treat $4.99 as the USD reference Google printed; the Offer Terms say the actual renewal is the standard monthly price for the applicable plan in your country.

Those U.S. list prices currently match the student-post renewal figures for Pro and Plus. That match is a 28 August 2026 observation, not a promise that month-13 prices stay frozen for a year.

Quota and storage cliffs (the part teams miss)

Two quiet clauses matter more than the headline “free Pro / Plus”:

Usage during the free year may not match a paying subscriber. The Offer Terms say you “may experience different usage limits than Google One members on a paid plan,” and that limits can change without notice, including for capacity. The student post’s 4× / 2× figures are versus non-AI subscribers, while the 28 August 2026 U.S. subscriptions page states 4× / 2× versus Free. If you are using this as a production seat, measure your own caps in the first week. Do not assume paid-Pro headroom.

Storage does not gently taper. U.S. Pro is 5 TB; Plus is 400 GB; a regular Google Account is 15 GB. If you cancel (or the offer ends and you do not pay) and you are over the free storage limit, Google says you must delete files or buy a membership before you can store anything new. For a freelancer, that means: do not park client deliverables, raw video, or the only copy of a photo library in the extra 5 TB / 400 GB unless month 13 is already funded. For a small team, this is still one personal account. It is not a shared firm license, and family-group accounts are excluded from the offer.

Do not mix this clock with the YouTube bundle

The student post also advertises a separate bundle: Google AI Pro plus a YouTube Premium subscription, “up to 70% off,” in select markets.

That bundle is not the 12-month free Pro / Plus trial. Google’s footnote says SheerID is required, a payment method is required, it is valid for up to four years, it may auto-renew at the standard monthly price once student status ends, it is individual use only, and it is not available on school-issued accounts. Combined Google / YouTube terms apply.

If you stack or choose that bundle, you are running a student-status clock, not a 12-month trial clock. Put a different reminder on it. This article does not treat “up to 70% off” as a verified local price; check the live offer screen before you buy.

Feature labels that already disagree

Quote the student post for what the promo claims. Quote the live plan page for what Google is selling today. They are not identical.

Gemini Spark: the 19 August 2026 student post includes Spark in the U.S. Pro student offer. The U.S. subscriptions page opened on 28 August lists Spark under Ultra as first access in select countries. If Spark is the reason you would keep Pro at $19.99, verify that feature on your account before renewal.
Google Health Premium vs Home Premium: the student post lists Google Health Premium among U.S. Pro student benefits (and points at this Google One help article). The U.S. subscriptions page opened on 28 August lists Google Home Premium (Standard) and YouTube Premium Lite on Pro, and a page search returns no Health Premium entry. Treat this as a documented page mismatch and verify the account benefit before renewal.
Gemini Omni: Plus student copy says “access to Gemini Omni.” The live Plus column leans on 2× usage, video generation, Daily Brief, and Flow credits with Gemini Omni Flash. Check the model picker after you claim.

Who should claim it

Claim it if you are an eligible student, 18+, on a personal Google account, in a covered market, and you will either (a) enjoy a year of extra Gemini quota / storage with a dated cancel reminder, or (b) you already intended to pay for Pro or Plus and this simply delays the first charge.

Skip it if you are in Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, Albania, Bolivia, or Tunisia for this offer; if the only account you have is a school-issued Workspace account; if you would have to join a family group to “share” it; or if the extra storage would become the only home for work files you cannot afford to freeze.

The two eligible tracks have roughly a 4× gap in Google’s published USD references. The U.S. Pro renewal is $19.99 / month; the eligible non-U.S. Plus track is $4.99 / month or a local-currency equivalent. That comparison does not cover excluded markets, and it does not predict the exchange-rate ratio on a local invoice.

Small teams: this is a personal student trial, not a way to provision the company. The terms require a personal Google Account, one student’s SheerID verification, and a Google Payments account with a qualifying payment method. If the work needs a seat that survives graduation, buy a normal plan on a work account.

The only reminder that matters

Redeem by 31 December 2026. Twelve months later, unpaid Pro becomes $19.99 / month (U.S.) and unpaid Plus becomes $4.99 / month or local equivalent (eligible non-U.S. markets). Cancel before that day if you do not want the charge. Keep the screenshot. Keep the calendar entry. Do not fake student status to get either number.
