OpenAI’s 4-Month Student Plus Offer Is a Work Trial With a $20 Trap

If you are a U.S. college student who also freelances, OpenAI’s 2026 Back to School offer is not a gift card. It is four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus — including ChatGPT Work — that start the day you claim, require a payment method, and then renew at $20/month unless you cancel. Claim by October 31, 2026. Set the exit alarm before you add a card.[1]

Offer terms move. Before you claim, re-read the live pages, not this recap: the student offer page at https://chatgpt.com/students/2026 and OpenAI’s Help Center article “ChatGPT Back to School offer for students.” The facts below are from those pages as accessed on 28 August 2026, plus OpenAI’s related Work and Codex-credit pages cited where they matter. If the live page disagrees with anything here, the live page wins.

What you are actually claiming

The marketing line is “Get 4 months of ChatGPT Work on us,” framed as an $80 value for eligible U.S. college students. The FAQ on the same page is more precise: four free months of ChatGPT Plus, including access to ChatGPT Work and other premium features. $80 is simply 4 × $20.[2]

ChatGPT Work, launched 9 July 2026, is an agent inside ChatGPT — not a separate SKU. OpenAI describes it as an agent that can work across apps and files, stay with a project for hours, and turn a goal into finished materials such as sheets, slides, docs, and web apps. On web and mobile, Work rolled out first to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu, then to Plus and Business. In the ChatGPT desktop app, OpenAI says Chat, Work, and Codex are available on every plan, including Free. So this student offer is not “the only way to touch Work.” It is four months of Plus-tier access: Work plus the rest of Plus, on the account you claim with. Treat desktop Free as a sniff test; treat Plus as the usage and feature window you are actually being handed.[3]

The Help Center states the four free monthly billing periods begin on the claim date, the offer can be redeemed once, and OpenAI cannot move the promo to a different account after it is applied. Pick the account you actually work in. A school Gmail you never open is a bad place to park four months you cannot transfer.[1]

Who can claim

As of 28 August 2026:

  • The Help Center: current full-time and part-time college and graduate students enrolled at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions. SheerID decides whether your school and enrollment qualify.[1]
  • The offer page: current full-time and part-time students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions; headline copy says “eligible U.S. college students”; claim by October 31.[2]

Part-time enrollment is explicitly in. That matters if you are taking a lighter course load and filling the rest of the week with client work. International campuses, non-degree programs, and schools SheerID does not list are not something this article can bless. Only SheerID’s check on your school can.

Your ChatGPT login does not have to be your school email. You do need a school-issued email to verify with SheerID while you are signed into the ChatGPT account where you want the offer applied. Completing verification on account A and expecting the months on account B is how people lose the one-time redeem. OpenAI says it cannot change the account after the fact.[1]

Prior student promotions do not, by themselves, block this one. If you used an older campus deal, you can still claim this offer if you otherwise meet current eligibility. Redeem still means once for this offer.[1]

SheerID is the gate, not ChatGPT support

Verification runs through SheerID. Depending on the school, SheerID may match trusted enrollment records, send you through campus SSO, or ask for documents. If that step fails — school missing from the list, name mismatch, document rejected — OpenAI points you to SheerID’s support form, not to a ChatGPT chat. As of the offer page: https://support.sheerid.com/en-US/help-center/contact-form. The Help Center points at https://support.sheerid.com/. Use whichever form is live when you hit the error.[2]

Help Center claim flow, as of 28 August 2026:

  1. Open the offer page in a web or mobile web browser.
  2. Sign in to the ChatGPT account that should receive Plus.
  3. Complete SheerID.
  4. Return to the offer flow and finish activation. New Plus subscribers add a payment method when asked.[1]

If SheerID already verified you but Plus never attached, OpenAI’s first check is whether you are still on the same ChatGPT account that entered the flow. Then go back to the offer link and hit Claim. That either continues checkout or shows which account the promo is on. Do not start over on a second login.[1]

The trap is billing, not eligibility

Read this block twice. It is the whole reason to set an alarm before you claim.

You need a payment method. New Plus activations require a valid payment method. OpenAI says you will not be charged for the four free monthly billing periods. Eligible existing Plus subscribers billed directly by ChatGPT can apply the offer to the current subscription. After the promotional period, the subscription renews at $20 per month unless you cancel. That sentence is on both the offer FAQ and the Help Center. It is not fine print we inferred.[1]

App Store and Google Play bills cannot claim. Subscriptions billed through Apple or Google are not supported while they remain store-billed. The offer cannot be applied on top of that bill. The offer page’s path: cancel in the store where you subscribed; you keep Plus until the current store period ends; then come back and see whether the offer is still available. That last clause is the risk. If your store period runs past October 31, 2026, you may exit the store bill and find the claim window closed. Do not assume a grace claim after the deadline. Confirm on the live page the day your store period actually ends.[2]

Canceling early burns unused free months. If you cancel before the four free months are over, Plus continues through the end of the current monthly billing period. After that, remaining promotional months are forfeited. “Cancel now so I don’t forget” is how you turn a four-month window into a few leftover days. The correct move is the opposite: use the four periods, then cancel during the fourth so you keep that period’s remaining days and do not roll into a paid fifth month.[1]

Existing monthly Plus billed by ChatGPT can still claim. You do not have to drop to Free first if OpenAI is already charging the card on file. Store-billed Plus is the exception, not all Plus.[1]

None of this is a reason to skip the offer if you qualify and you will actually use Plus. It is a reason to treat the card on file as a loaded spring.

Use it as a freelance trial, not as “free ChatGPT”

The useful reader stance is: this is a time-boxed Plus trial for client work, with a known end date you put on a calendar before checkout.

During the four billing periods, run the jobs you would otherwise pay $20/month to accelerate:

  • Work on real briefs, not homework-only. The offer page itself pitches connecting email, files, and calendar; turning notes and data into presentations and apps; ChatGPT Sites for club/portfolio/startup pages; voice for rehearsal; quizzes; diagrams and posters. For a side-gig student, that maps onto client decks, one-page sites, research memos, and interview prep for the next contract — not onto “ask it to summarize a PDF once.” If Work cannot finish a paid-shaped task in week one, you learned that while the meter was still $0.[2]
  • Codex on the same account, with a separate credit offer if you qualify. Codex is not a second login. OpenAI’s student Codex-credit terms say Codex is part of your ChatGPT account and uses that sign-in; cloud Codex needs ChatGPT login, not API-key-only auth. Plus is one lever. A different student program offers verified university students in the United States and Canada $100 in Codex credits (shown as 2,500 credits), one grant per student, expiring 12 months after the grant, to extend Codex usage beyond the limits already in your ChatGPT plan. Do not assume the Plus Back to School claim auto-grants the $100. Do not assume the $100 replaces Plus. If you code for clients, check both, on the account you will keep. Verify the kept account before claiming either offer.[4]
  • Measure throughput, not vibes. Four months is long enough to see whether Plus-tier Work/Codex actually shortens a freelance week: proposal to draft, repo to patch, notes to a site. If it does, $20/month after the promo is a business expense you can defend. If it does not, you cancel in month four and you have not funded OpenAI’s winter. That is the whole experiment. The offer is the window. The alarm is the control.

Claim-date math is boring and it is the part people skip. Four monthly billing periods from the claim date, not “until the end of the semester” and not “until 31 October plus four months of extra grace.” A claim on 28 August 2026 is a different paid-conversion date than a claim on 31 October 2026. Write the expected start of month 5 on a calendar the same hour you submit the card. Add a second alert one week before that date. Confirm the date in ChatGPT billing after activation; do not trust a blog’s arithmetic, including this one, over the invoice.

Deadline pressure: October 31, 2026 is a claim deadline, not a “start anytime later” deadline. Waiting until late October because a store subscription has to die first is rational. Waiting with no calendar is how the window closes while the card is still on Apple.[1]

Recheck current terms, then claim on purpose

Volatile pieces to re-check on the official pages the day you act: eligibility wording (college vs graduate, part-time, U.S.-only), October 31, 2026, $20 post-promo price, payment-method requirement, store-billing exclusion, early-cancel forfeiture, one-time redeem, and “Work included with Plus.” Also confirm whether your freelance stack actually needs Plus on web/mobile or whether desktop Free Work/Codex already covers the jobs you have. The $80 headline is only value if you would have paid for Plus.

OpenAI Student Collective and ChatGPT Futures are adjacent campus programs on the offer page. They are not the four free months. Do not conflate community signup with Plus activation.[2]

Before you claim / while you use it / one week before it ends:

  • Before you claim: Confirm the live offer and Help Center terms; sign into the ChatGPT account you will keep; if you are App Store/Google Play billed, exit that bill only if the offer will still be open when the store period ends; complete SheerID on that same account; add the card only after a calendar alert is set for the start of month 5 and a second alert one week earlier.
  • While it is free: Run Work and Codex on actual client-shaped work (deliverables, sites, repos), and if you qualify, claim the separate $100 Codex credits on the same kept account; track whether Plus-tier limits change your output enough to justify $20 later.
  • One week before the fourth period ends: Open ChatGPT billing, confirm the renewal date and $20 price on the live invoice, cancel in time to keep the rest of the current period and forfeit nothing you still want, or keep Plus with eyes open as a freelance tool — not as a forgotten student perk.
