Quick Answer
If finance needs an invoice issued by Anthropic, buy Claude Pro or Max on the web. A Claude subscription purchased through iOS or Android is billed by Apple or Google, and Anthropic does not issue that store invoice.
A refund request does not replace cancellation. On iOS, only Apple can review the refund, while the subscription must still be canceled separately to stop future renewal.
The merchant decides the document
Anthropic’s invoice guide covers Pro and Max plans purchased on the web. For plans purchased through Claude for iOS or Android, Apple or Google bills the customer and the receipt lives in the corresponding store account.
| Purchase channel | Merchant and receipt | Who handles the refund path | Where renewal is canceled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude web | Anthropic | Anthropic Support checks eligibility | Claude Settings → Billing |
| Claude for iOS | Apple | Apple alone reviews App Store refunds | Apple subscription controls |
| Claude for Android | Google Play receipt; Anthropic does not issue the invoice | Anthropic Support follows its documented Play eligibility process | Google Play subscription controls |
This article is about the merchant boundary. Setting a company name, tax ID, billing address, or currency on a web invoice is covered separately in the Claude and ChatGPT invoice setup guide.
iOS: refund and cancel are two actions
Anthropic’s refund guide says Apple processed an iOS payment, so Anthropic Support cannot access or refund the App Store charge. Apple decides whether to grant a refund.
The same Anthropic page explicitly warns that requesting a refund does not cancel the subscription. A user who wants both outcomes must:
- request review through Apple’s Report a Problem refund flow; and
- cancel the Claude subscription in the Apple billing channel before the next renewal.
Do not describe an Apple refund request as an approved refund, and do not treat a cancellation confirmation as money returned for the current term.
Android: do not copy the iOS rule
Anthropic documents a different process for Google Play purchases.
- For an active Play subscription, contact Anthropic Support so it can check refund eligibility.
- For an inactive Play subscription, provide the Google Play account email or the GPA order number from the Play receipt.
That is not a promise of a refund, and it is not evidence that Anthropic can issue an invoice for the store transaction. Google remains the billing merchant shown by the receipt; Anthropic’s support process decides what assistance is available.
Web refunds and bank disputes
For a web purchase, Anthropic directs users to the in-product support messenger and checks the request against the applicable policy. The refund page says payments are generally non-refundable except where the Consumer Terms or law provide otherwise.
The same page says Anthropic cannot process a refund while a bank dispute is pending because the disputed funds have already been pulled back. A card dispute is therefore not an extra Anthropic refund route. Preserve the invoice, cancellation record, support case, and bank correspondence before escalating.
The broader evidence and escalation sequence is in AI subscription billing disputes. This guide makes only the narrower point: use the channel that owns the charge.
Moving from a store subscription to web billing
Anthropic’s cancellation guide says cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and should be completed at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Cancel on the platform where the subscription began.
A low-risk switch looks like this:
- Confirm the merchant from the store receipt or web invoice.
- Download the receipt and record the renewal date.
- Cancel in that merchant’s channel at least 24 hours before renewal.
- Retain access through the already-paid term.
- After the store term ends, subscribe at Claude’s web billing page.
- Set invoice name, tax ID, address, and currency before the first web charge.
Waiting until the store term ends is an operational safeguard against overlapping billing, not a promise from Anthropic that duplicate subscriptions are impossible. Verify the active subscription state before paying again.
The buy-side rule
Use mobile store billing when the store receipt is acceptable and store-managed refunds are understood. Use web billing when finance needs Anthropic as the merchant and needs Anthropic’s invoice workflow.
The place where the subscription was purchased controls the invoice and cancellation door. The app used for daily chats does not change that merchant.
