Canva AI Pass Costs $100, but Store-Billed Plans Cannot Buy It
Canva AI Pass adds 40x or 20x more AI allowance for $100 per person monthly. App Store, Google Play, trial, and prepaid plans are ineligible.
Heavy image and video users on Canva often hit the monthly AI cap in week two or three. The product then offers AI Pass. That prompt is easy to misread. AI Pass is an optional, recurring add-on. It does not unlock new AI features. It multiplies the shared Standard, Premium, and Ultra allowance you already have, at one global price: USD $100 per person, per month.
The second misread is more expensive if you subscribed on a phone. A Canva plan billed through the App Store or Google Play cannot buy AI Pass. Canva’s published path is to cancel through the store, wait until that billing period ends, then resubscribe at canva.com. That is a billing migration, not an in-app upgrade.
This is a buy / don’t-buy / can’t-buy guide. It is not a Magic Studio tour. Figures below are as of August 2026 from Canva’s AI Pass help article and AI Pass product page. Confirm the Billing screen before you pay.
AI Pass is more allowance, not more tools
Canva is explicit: AI Pass “doesn’t unlock additional features.” It sits on top of a web-managed Canva Pro, Teams, Business, or Nonprofits plan and gives that person Canva’s largest allowance across Standard, Premium, and Ultra tools. Those three tiers share one combined pool. Ultra generations take more of the same pool than Standard ones, which is why a video-heavy month dies faster than a template-edit month.
You do not need AI Pass to use Canva AI. The add-on only scales the pool.
It also does not cover AI design tools that sit outside the monthly allowance: Magic Write, Photo and Video Animations, and AI Voice. Those stay on the base plan, with fair-use limits. Third-party AI apps in Canva’s Apps Marketplace can have their own subscriptions and caps. If a marketplace app says you are out of credits, that is not an AI Pass problem.
Pro and Business subscribers can use the same AI Pass inside Affinity. That still is not a feature unlock. It is the same enlarged pool on another Canva surface.
The only list price: USD $100, globally, per person
Canva does not regionalize this add-on in the help article. The listed price is:
- USD $100 globally per person, per month
That is a seat-level line item, not a studio license. One designer on AI Pass is $100. Three people on AI Pass are $300, on top of Canva itself. For Teams and Business, only owners and admins can buy it, and they buy it per person from the People page.
The multiplier is not the same on every plan:
- Pro, Teams, and Nonprofits: 40× more AI with AI Pass
- Business: 20× more AI with AI Pass
Business gets the smaller multiplier because the base Business pool is already larger. Canva does not publish a useful absolute generation count for Pro/Teams/Business in the AI Pass article, and this page will not invent one. Track the remaining balance on Settings → Billing → AI usage. Annual Canva plans still reset that AI balance monthly.
Billing interval is locked to the Canva plan, not to what you wish AI Pass were:
- Annual Canva: you can buy AI Pass monthly or annually. Annual AI Pass is charged a proportional amount for the rest of the current annual period.
- Monthly Canva: AI Pass is monthly only. You cannot switch it to annual.
If you later move Canva from monthly to annual, AI Pass stays monthly unless you change its interval in Billing. Interval changes take effect at the end of the current AI Pass period. You can only purchase AI Pass once. It is not a stack of extra 40× packs.
Two locks: the app surface, and the store channel
Eligible plans are web-managed Pro, Teams, Business, and Nonprofits.
AI Pass is not available if you are on:
- Canva Free, Education, or Enterprise
- a free trial
- a prepaid plan (1-day, 1-week, 1-month, or 1-year)
- a subscription managed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store
If the purchase option is missing, Canva’s own checklist is:
- Prepaid: switch to a monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscription first.
- Free trial: start the paid plan first.
- App Store / Google Play: cancel through the store, wait for the billing period to end, then resubscribe at canva.com.
- Canva iOS or Android app: open canva.com in a browser. AI Pass cannot be purchased in the mobile app.
- Team member: ask the owner or admin. Only they can buy it.
Treat those as two different failures.
Surface lock. Even a web-billed Pro user cannot complete the purchase inside the iOS or Android app. The fix is a browser at canva.com, not a different plan.
Channel lock. If Apple or Google owns the subscription, Canva will not sell AI Pass on top of it. The official path is store cancel → wait out the current period → new subscription at canva.com. You do not get the extra allowance today. You get it after the store term dies and billing moves to Canva.
That wait is the whole point for phone subscribers. “Add $100” is not an available SKU on a store-managed plan.
If you only needed the general web-versus-store cancel path, that is a separate billing problem. This page only covers why that channel refuses AI Pass. Do not plan the migration in a client week unless you can wait until the store period ends.
What happens after AI Pass still runs out
Canva will warn you as you approach the cap. After AI Pass is exhausted:
- Pro / Teams: upgrade the Canva plan, or keep using premium AI with short pauses between tasks.
- Business: buy an AI top-up. You can hold an active top-up and AI Pass at the same time. Short pauses also apply once both pools are gone.
- Nonprofits: short pauses. No top-up path in the AI Pass article.
- Otherwise the pool resets on the subscription renewal date.
AI Pass is the wrong product for a one-week spike if you are on Business and can buy a top-up instead. Top-ups are a one-time, non-renewing block equal to the monthly Business allowance, usable for 30 days, and they do not roll over. Only one top-up can be active at a time. Once purchased, a top-up cannot be cancelled.
Canva’s AI top-up help page is internally inconsistent about store billing: its eligibility note limits top-ups to online Business subscriptions, while its purchase and troubleshooting sections direct App Store / Google Play Business subscribers to the Canva mobile app. Treat store-managed top-up eligibility as confirm-current in the in-product checkout. Canva does not list a public dollar price for top-ups on that page.
A buy test for freelancers and small teams
Buy AI Pass for a named person when all of these are true:
- That person already hits the shared Standard / Premium / Ultra cap most months, not once.
- Canva billing is web-managed, or you have already finished a store-to-canva.com migration.
- You are the owner/admin, or you can get one to attach Pass to that seat only.
- A mid-month pause would cost more than $100 in delayed client work.
- The work that dies is image/video generation in the shared pool, not Magic Write, animations, or AI Voice.
Do not buy it when:
- You are on Free, Education, Enterprise, a trial, or prepaid. The SKU is not for those plans.
- You are store-billed and you need generations this period. Pass cannot fire until the store term ends.
- Only one person in a five-seat team is overflowing. Do not attach $100 to idle seats.
- The overflow is a single campaign week on Business. A 30-day top-up is the product that matches a spike.
- You already have AI Pass. You cannot buy it again. The next levers are upgrade, top-up (Business), pause, or wait for reset.
Run the seat math the same way you would for any per-person add-on. If two of five people generate, budget $200, not $500. If nobody can tell you whose Billing “AI usage” bar actually hits zero, you are not ready to add a $100 line.
How to buy it, and how to take it off
On a web-managed, eligible plan, Canva’s path is:
- Profile → Settings → Billing
- Under AI usage, select Get more
- Annual Canva only: choose Monthly or Yearly
- Purchase AI Pass
For someone else: Settings → People, then Get more AI next to that member. It takes effect immediately and shows as its own Billing line. Annual AI Pass may be prorated to the remaining Canva year.
To remove your own Pass: Billing → Remove next to AI Pass → confirm. Admins remove a member’s Pass from People → AI usage. After cancel, Pass keeps working until the end of the current billing cycle. Canva emails you. Keep AI Pass undoes the cancel if you catch it in time.
That cancel only stops the add-on. It does not migrate an App Store subscription. Canva’s Terms of Use say paid subscription and add-on fees are ordinarily non-refundable except where law requires otherwise.
Check this before you tap Purchase
- Open Billing on canva.com in a browser, not in the iOS or Android app.
- Confirm the charge descriptor is Canva, not Apple or Google. Store-managed plans are ineligible.
- Confirm you are owner/admin if this is Teams or Business.
- Confirm the person who actually hits the cap—the $100 is per person.
- If you are on monthly Canva, accept monthly AI Pass. There is no annual Pass on a monthly plan.
- If you are on Business and the need is a short spike, price a top-up in checkout before you commit to a recurring $100.
- If you are store-billed Pro and you truly want Pass every month, treat store cancel + wait + canva.com resubscribe as a planned billing change, not as a same-day quota fix.
